Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic multisystemic disease of unknown cause. The characteristic feature is persistent inflammatory synovitis usually involving peripheral joints in a symmetrical distribution. Synovial inflammation causes cartilage destruction and bone erosion.
